Author – Chetan Baghat
The book revolves around college lads studying in one of the top universities in India. Two class mates from different states of the country trying to cajole their respective and irrespective parents to get them into a Wedlock.
Rib ticking narration that takes us on a tour around different states and cultures of India. The author’s ridicule and exclamation of the other culture(The prospective bride’s culture) makes the readers to enjoy the book. If the reader is one among the two states , then the reality would strike them hard.
Coming to the location, IIM-A Ahmedabad where they get to know each other and we get to know them. We travel along with them to Goa, Chennai and Delhi. All the places show their own cultural heritage and the spoils of the same. Being from Chennai , I was able to relate to the auto drivers who try to misguide you, the landlord who is too strict and the sardar ji who could talk fluent tamil to save your head from the auto drivers.
This book is inspiration of the author’s real life, the author uses some phrases to describe his in-laws or his family members, here are a couple of them, When his to-be-father-in-law puts his head inside the newspaper he is called the Grumpy Swamy (Swaminathan is his father in law’s name in the book), when he meets his little to be brother-in-law a nerd he is called the Embyo IITan. And all through the book he describes Ananya’s(his girl friend) saree, salwar or any outfit she wears, a scary fact that even a guy can notice the intricate details of a girl’s dress.
The plot is about how a guy deeply in love with one of his classmates, tries not only to win her heart but also tries seek her parents and his families blessings in taking her hand in marriage. But in the middle of the book when Krish Malhotra (protagonist) proposes to Ananya’s whole family to convince them seems a little bit filmy. Also Ananya showing her own out of the world skills to make pinky’s marriage work was a bit too mush to digest.
Over all I loved the book, laughed until it hurt and re read it when I felt down. It is a good book for people who are looking for a breezy reading in lucid English. Over all enjoyable one if you know what Indian states and family structure is all about.
